Updates and New Offerings at Lotus Speech & Wellness

What's new at Lotus Speech & Wellness

We’ve been growing and adapting for three years: the idea for Lotus Speech & Wellness first developed in 2020, I saw my first Maine client in the fall of 2021, and now two years later I have an established speech therapy practice in Maine! Though the mission to improve communication, cognition, and mind-body wellness has stayed the same, I’m excited to share what’s new with Lotus Speech & Wellness.

I initially conceptualized and launched Lotus Speech & Wellness with my friend and fellow SLP Caitlin Chambers. We met in 2009 while attending graduate school at the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston, and share an interest in neurorehabilitation. Because Caitlin lives in Massachusetts and I live in Maine, we never thought we’d be able to work together, let alone start a practice together. However, when the pandemic arrived, telepractice became more widely available and accepted. We realized we could create an accessible, online practice available to residents of both of our states. We developed the idea and business plan for Lotus Speech & Wellness in 2020, and officially formed the business in 2021.

As of 2023, following thoughtful conversations between me and Caitlin about our own personal and professional lives and goals, I am now the sole owner of Lotus Speech & Wellness, LLC. Speech therapy services are offered in Maine only; we are not currently offering speech therapy to residents of Massachusetts. I am so grateful to Caitlin for our friendship, and for all her support in creating and developing Lotus Speech & Wellness; I would not have started this practice without her!

Wellness Offerings Expanded

Lotus Speech & Wellness started by offering three types of services:

  1. Skilled Speech Therapy Services: Evaluation and treatment of speech, language, and cognitive impairments in adults resulting from acquired brain injury (e.g., TBI, concussion, stroke, aphasia), neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Primary Progressive Aphasia), and ADHD.
  2. Yoga and Mindfulness Offerings: I completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training as well as the LoveYourBrain Yoga training so I can teach yoga and mindfulness both in group and individual settings. I recorded many of my live yoga classes and created an on-demand yoga video collection. Check it out today!
  3. Online Resources: We have a Resources page and a Blog on our website, and also regularly update our Instagram and Facebook social media accounts. Please like and follow me there!

I have expanded our wellness offerings to include family consultations, executive function coaching, and continued cognitive wellness support after completion of speech therapy services. I am also excited to announce that I recently launched a new virtual Parkinson’s Voice Practice group. Maine residents can register for that group on our website HERE.

Contract Services Now Offered

National Aphasia Association Logo

This past year I began offering contract services through Lotus Speech & Wellness, LLC. First, I am the Virtual Coordinator for the National Aphasia Association. I help coordinate their online conversation groups, which include topics ranging from Black American Aphasia Conversation group, to the Parenting with Aphasia group, the Journey through Speech group, and my own Aphasia and Wellness group. My other responsibility is to coordinate and host their Ask the Expert webinars, which feature panelists ranging from people with aphasia, to researchers, to clinicians, and caregivers, and more! You can watch recordings of prior webinars on YouTube HERE. It has been such a pleasure and honor to work with the NAA and the wider aphasia community this year. Also, did you know that Lotus Speech & Wellness is an NAA Affiliate?

Second, given my prior experience working in K-12 schools, I am pleased to offer limited contract speech therapy services in local school districts in southern Maine. If you are interested in learning more about contract speech therapy servcies with Lotus Speech & Wellness, please email me at katherine@lotusslp.com.
