We are so excited to introduce you to Lotus Speech and Wellness, an online resource focusing on holistic approaches to improving speech, language, and cognition for individuals with brain injuries. We are two speech-language pathologists (SLPs), Caitlin Chambers and Katherine Noyes, who met in graduate school in Boston, MA in 2009. We’ve stayed close friends ever since, and among other things we have in common (we’re both moms, we have cute dogs, we love watching The Bachelor, etc…), we both enjoy working with adults recovering from brain injuries AND we both discovered yoga over the past few years as a form of self care. We’ve realized that many of the principles and strategies from yoga and mindfulness have the potential to benefit people with brain injury who are working on speech, language, and cognitive skills. We hope this website will be a way to share information about the intersection of speech-language pathology and mind-body wellness to support people with brain injury and their caregivers.
You might be wondering: Why “Lotus” Speech and Wellness? The lotus flower is a symbol often used within the wellness community because it symbolizes rebirth and resilience: though it grows through muddy water, it blossoms into something beautiful. Although experiencing a brain injury can be a traumatic, negative experience, we have been so inspired by how survivors of brain injury demonstrate such resilience and are able to turn their situation into something positive.
We look forward to hearing from you – please share your thoughts, questions, comments, feedback, etc! We are not currently offering medical advice or skilled speech-language services, however we are eager to hear what particular topics you would be interested to learn more about. You can reach out to us using our Contact Us form or can find us on Instagram and Twitter at: @Lotus_SLP.
